BOOKS

Lawrence Ferlinghetti, the poet and founder of City Lights Books reading his poems. Thomas Merton stayed in the room upstairs.
Ferlinghetti was a seminal member of the Beat movement, publishing a portion of the movement's poetry and even going so far as to defend its texts in a court case that continues to secure press freedom for publishers of unique books today. Ferlinghetti lived to be 101, not bad.
